Performance BMW 135iSporty BMWs and aftermarket add-ons go hand-in-hand. Some AC Schnitzer aluminium pedals for your M3, perhaps? A set of Hartge rims? Maybe even a Dinan supercharger kit? Now BMW has decided to tap this lucrative niche, offering the BMW Performance line of exterior and interior accessories for the 1- and 3-series. Here we drive the firm’s fully loaded 135i demo.

Looks tasty. How much?
The basic 135i lists at £29,610, but the options on our car take that to just over £47k. Not all of that is accounted for by the Performance range, however. There’s Boston leather (£970), folding mirrors (£165), sat-nav (£1930), Xenons (£620) and more.

The remaining £11.5k goes to BMW Performance – and doesn’t include fitting or painting. But before we get too indignant about the price, remember that this very special 135i is still £3.5k cheaper than an entirely naked M3, and that the whole point is to showcase the kit you’ll mix and match in line with your tastes and budget. Saying that, I do want it all.
Okay then, break it down

Eighteen-inch 313 alloys (£2553), aluminium pedals (£53), uprated brakes (£1145), black kidney grilles (£57), rear carbon diffuser (£745), new front bumper (£630), carbon splitters (£310), handbrake grip and gaiter (£65), carbon mirror caps (£350), rear spoiler (£225), sideskirts (£215), sports suspension (£810), exhaust silencer (£550), short-shift kit (£220), sports seats (£2900), and – phew! – sports steering wheel (£675).

Any favourites?
Performance BMW 135iNone of the mods are without merit, but the seats were excellent – proper race-like Recaros that combine comfort, safety (they retained side airbags) and adjustability with the business of holding torsos tight through bends.

Also tempting is the steering wheel. It’s clearly based on a regular BMW three-spoker, but adds tactile suede at the all-important quarter-to-three position, plus digital shift-light indicators and a lap-timer display – seriously useful if you do the odd track day.

Lastly, the short-shift kit made a huge difference for quite a small price, the gear level feeling pleasingly stubby and improving the directness of the shift too – it reminded us why it’s still nice to shift manually, however good dual-clutch gearboxes are.

What happens to your standard seats, steering wheel, bumper etc?
Performance BMW 135iTherein lies the rub. There’s no buy-back scheme and a 135i comes only in M Sport guise, so it’s already got alloys, sports suspension, nicer seats – even if they’re not as nice as the Performance stuff. That leaves you with a pile of new stuff to store or flog cut-price.

It perhaps makes more sense for lower-spec or secondhand models, but the Performance range needs to be better integrated into new car purchases – after all, if you spec alloys you don’t usually pay for a set of 16-inch steels too.
It isn’t all bad news, though – your factory warranty is unaffected.

Developed by Citroën Racing – the winning team behind five WRC manufacturer’s titles and six driver’s titles for Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena – Citroën DS3 Racing is a special edition with a 100% sporting pedigree. Planned for the second half of 2010, the exclusive Citroën DS3 Racing will be limited to just 1000 production units. With integrated carbon-trimmed components and specialist motorsports equipment, Citroën DS3 Racing’s tuned and turbo-charged 1.6-litre THP 150 engine develops 200hp – a power increase of almost 30% over the standard unit – with a torque increase of 15% from 240Nm to 275Nm.

To achieve the additional power output, from 156hp to 200hp, Citroën Racing’s engineers modified and optimised the powertrain components, tuned the performance of the turbo and adjusted the mapping of the engine control unit. A special tail pipe and muffler were also added. Allowing Citroën DS3 Racing to stick to the road, the car has undergone some significant sporting enhancements. The steering has been made even more precise, with the control system modified for the new tyres. The fitment of stiffer suspension springs, adapted front and rear shock absorbers (to handle the increased power), and the widening of the front and rear tracks by 30mm – plus lowering the car by 15mm – all dramatically change the driving dynamics.

These important developments reinforce both the stability and dynamic control of the car, and enhance the feedback between the road and the driver. The braking system has also been up-rated to ensure control over the car’s additional horsepower. The front wheels get 4-piston racing callipers and special disc-brakes – with drilled discs at the rear. For enhanced control, the ESP has been adapted to complement the sportier handling, but can be disengaged according to the driver’s preference.

In addition to the distinctive, radical styling of DS3, the new Citroën DS3 Racing edition inherits Citroën Racing’s expertise in motorsport design to provide advanced technological and stylistic sporting prowess. The preview model, to be presented at Geneva, is in a special livery and features sporty ‘DS3′, ‘Citroën Racing’ and chequered flag graphics on the roof, in front of the rear wheel arches, under the side mirrors and next to the fuel cap.

Measuring 3.94m long, Citroën DS3 Racing’s dark grey body is tastefully contrasted with a vibrant, bright orange-coloured roof, side mirrors and brake callipers. The alloy wheels and front grille surround – with integrated chevrons – are finished in orange chrome. A sporty carbon finish is used around the front bumper, lower body trim and wing extensions, whilst large 18″ alloy wheels, chrome door handles and even a chrome-finished exhaust complete the dynamic styling.

Inside the cabin, smart carbon trim adorns the dashboard, centre console, steering wheel embellisher, armrests and door side mouldings. The vibrant orange bodywork and decals continue into the cabin with the glossy strip of the dash, gear stick and gear stick surround finished in the same bright tone. The sporty, figure-hugging seats are also touched with orange elements and are embossed with ‘Citroën Racing‘. A Citroën DS3 Racing signature on the rear tailgate and an individually numbered identification plate fixed to the roof-lining further confirm the model’s exclusivity.

The width of 1,842 millimeters (6.04 ft) and the height of 1,352 millimeters (4.44 ft) and 1,357 millimeters (4.45 ft) for the Coupe and Roadster, respectively, remain unchanged. The wheelbase measures 2,468 millimeters (8.10 ft). Four new metallic colors have been added to the TT color range: Scuba Blue, Oolong Gray, Volcano Red and Dakota Gray. Daytona Gray, pearl effect is also available with the S line package.

The inaugural Barbican Turbo Show, organized by the United Business Media was the hottest and biggest custom car festival ever to hit the UAE. It featured some of the most awesome customized and performance modified cars in the Middle East, all gathered under one roof at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in November 2008. Motor clubs displaying their members custom cars included UAE Boost, the VW Club, the Abu Dhabi Riders, SAFE (Society of Auto Owners and Filipino Expats), Pinoy, ExoClass and the Corvette UAE Club. The glittering custom cars on display ranged from well maintained classic cars to pimped-out Hummers and over-the-top street racers!

And as if that wasn’t enough, the top Japanese car drifting team, Team Orange Drift, who showed off their in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, brought along two orange-striped 450 bhp Subaru Impreza GBDs in which they performed twin-drifts (tsuiou)! Pity the Barbican Turbo Show was staged on the same weekend as the Motorsports Festival at the Dubai Autodrome.
